Hey there, I've lived on the Central Coast all my life and I loved going to the beach as a kid. Over the past few years I'd swim out further and further and dive deeper and deeper. Then one day I found out that it's got a name and that's how I found this forum.

So far though I can't understand much of the techniques and jargon used. Stuff like "apnea capability" and "dry statics" go over my head. I really enjoy free-diving and want to get better at it but I can't seem to find any simply written guides, most videos and 'beginners' sites are either too vague or want you to buy something. I'd appreciate any help.

Sorry for the hassle,
Jared.

Hi All,
May & June saw more Australian records set. Congratulations to Alana Caskey Wells who set 2 new NR's in CWT with 50m, and 41m in FIM both done in the FDD Minicomp, Dahab Egyp. There are more records pending from Alana, Mike Wells and Ben Noble. These were done as record attempts so I need to wait for some confirmation and details from the AFA before I can post any of those.

I have updated the records & history pages :-

Hi All,
Last month saw 4 new Australian records set. Congratulations to Jasmine Bastow for 3 National records set in Hawaii - 47m CW, 40m FI & 30m CNF. Also Walter Steyn for 82m FI set in Bahamas. (CW = swimming down&up with fins, FI = pulling down&up on a rope, CNF = swimming down&up without fins, normally using a modified breastroke)

I have updated the records & history pages :-

Thanks for the update Wal, I daresay you'll need to update it again given the flurry of records we've had from yourself and others in the last week alone!

In case you've had your head in a hole the last week (eg. a 200m one in the Bahamas), Jasmine has been sweating it out in Hawaii where she has taken all three depth records, including a 47m constant weight dive breaking Sacha's old record from 2002.

Cheers,
Ben

ps Glad to see the forum up again, I wasn't sure if it was permanently off there for a while!

Hi All,
I have updated this site site so that the records and records history pages are now up to date.

http://www.ozfreediving.com/Records.php
http://www.ozfreediving.com/Records_history.php

There will be a few updates to come as there are still some competitions in progress. There has been a lot of competition freediving activity in Aus over the last year, I think at least 12 national records were set in 2009. We also had the 1st freediving competition in Australia and I'm sure there will be much more to come.  I will keep this website much more up to date in future. Last year I was working on another website and neglected this site somewhat.

Cheers,
Wal

Hi All,
on the AFA site we will be compiling a list of all perfomances from Australian freedivers for each year. There is an official world ranking list, so this one is a smaller version of that for Australian divers, will also include where they are by world standards. We have some pretty impressive new freedivers coming into the scene now no doubt will some more people crack the top 10. The 2008 list is up now, will do this years and probably go back and do some for previous years also.

Can see the world ranking lists here :-

Recently a new milestone was achieved in Australian freediving with the first AIDA freediving competition taking place in Sydney. The Neptune Trans Tasman Freedive Competition was held on 15/16 August at the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre. The famous wave-shaped building is normally graced by athletes such as Libby Trickett and Eamon Sullivan who are more accustomed to setting records on the surface rather than below it. The event, run by the Australian Freediving Association partnered with local club Sydney Freedivers, was the brainchild of kiwi champion freediver Ant Williams. The judges present were Fran Rose, Walter Steyn, Erez Beatus with organiser Ben Noble also assisting. The inaugural event had a entry list of 13 athletes attending from such nations as Denmark, France, Great Britain as well as New Zealand and Australia.

queenscliffe!

on the way to queenscliffe there is a right hand turn off down a small road which takes you to a BIG old hotel on the water, swim out about 50-100m and there are depths between 8-15m there. i think its henry street you turn down off the bellarine Hwy, at the end of the road ther is a grass area for parking and suiting up then just walk down the little track to the beach and jump in.

pretty good vis normally and some nice reef drop offs which can be fun for spotting fish, stingrays etc.
