World Freediving Cup - Sardinia 1998

World team championship with over 20 countries taking place. It was the first time Australia had put a team into a freediving championship. The team comprised of many of the top Spearfishermen in the country including Ian Puckeridge,Greg Pickering, Adam Smith and Pete Watman. Teams comprised of 5 divers the placings determined by adding up both depth dive and static performances of each of the 5 divers. (example - 5min static = 50 points + 40m dive = 40 points, total = 90). Competition was run under AIDA rules. The depth limit for this competition was 60m.

As this was the first time any Australians had competed in a freediving competition,
the first Australian records were also set during the competition.

  • Constant Weight = depth dive with fins, no change in ballast
  • Static Apnea = breathold lying still in a pool
  • Dynamic Apnea = distance covered underwater in a pool
